You: Those seats are all right. And can we have the menu, please?

Lily: Oh do you? I prefer fish to beefsteak. And…
Ken: What’s the matter?
Lily: I knew this would happen.
Ken: What’s that?
Lily: That waiter has a bad attitude.
Ken: Do you think so?
Lily: I told him I didn’t want pepper.
Ken: Yes, I know that.
Lily: But there is pepper all over my steak.
Ken: Really?
Lily: I suppose he didn’t listen to me.
Ken: I guess not.

prefer A to B：「BよりもAを好む」
What’s the matter?：「どうしたの？」と言いたいときの決まり文句。
I knew this would happen.：knew「知っていた」が過去形なので、時制の一致でwillも過去形のwouldとなった。
attitude：「態度」
told：tellの過去形で「伝えた」
pepper：「こしょう」
suppose：「～だと思う、推定する」
I guess not.：I guess he didn’t listen to you.を省略した言い方。

レストランで何かを注文するときは、気を遣いますね。
美味しい食事を気持ちよく食べるには、注文するときの内容をしっかりウェイターに伝えたいです。
日本のレストランは、注文を繰り返してくれるところが多いですが、日本以外の国ではそのような習慣はなさそうです。
