今回のテーマは「地震のことについて話す」です。

ボブとマリがニュースで聞いたことについて会話しています。

彼らの会話を覗いてみましょう。

★会話★

Bob and Mari are talking about the news.

Bob: Did you watch the news on TV this morning?

Mari: No. What happened?

Bob: There was a big earthquake in northern Japan.

Mari: Do you know the scale of the earthquake?

Bob: Well, they said it was intensity 6 upper.

Mari: Oh, so huge? Were a lot of people killed?

Bob: Yes, over 2,000 people were dead. And about 1,000 people were reported missing. The tsunami rushed toward them. And tsunami broke down the town.

Mari: Oh, no!

Bob: Do you prepare in case a natural disaster like earthquake hits?

Mari: Actually, no I don’t.

Bob: We should prepare against disaster.

Mari: You are right.

northern:「北の」

scale:「規模」「大きさ」

intensity:「強烈さ」「(日本の気象庁が震度計による観測値に基づいて発表する)震度」

upper:「上の」「最大の」ここでは、震度○「強」の意味。これに対し、lowerが震度○「弱」となる。

huge:「巨大な」

be killed:「亡くなる」

be dead:「亡くなる」

missing:「行方不明の」

rush:「突進する」「急襲する」

toward:「~の方へ」

prepare:「準備する」

in case:「万が一の場合に備えて」「~するといけないから」

natural disaster:「自然災害」

like:「~のような」

actually:「実際は」「実は」

★訳文★

Bob and Mari are talking about the news. (ボブとマリがニュースのことについて話をしています。)

Bob: Did you watch the news on TV this morning? (今朝、テレビのニュースを見た?)

Mari: No. What happened? (いいえ。何かあったの?)

Bob: There was a big earthquake in northern Japan. (北日本に大きな地震があったんだ。)

Mari: Do you know the scale of the earthquake? (地震の大きさはどれくらいか知っている?)

Bob: Well, they said it was intensity 6 upper. (えーと、震度6強だって言っていた。)

Mari: Oh, so huge? Were a lot of people killed? (ええ!そんなに大きいの?たくさんの人が亡くなったのかしら。)

Bob: Yes, over 2,000 people were dead. And about 1,000 people were reported missing. The tsunami rushed toward them. And tsunami broke down the town. (うん。2,000人以上の人が亡くなったんだ。そして、1,000人が行方不明と報道されていたよ。津波が彼らを襲ったんだ。さらに、津波は街を破壊した。)

Mari: Oh, no! (あら、大変!)

Bob: Do you prepare in case a natural disaster like earthquake hits? (地震のような自然災害が起きたときのために備えはしてある?)

Mari: Actually, no I don’t. (実は、してないの。)

Bob: We should prepare against disaster. (僕たちは災害に備えるべきだね。)

Mari: You are right. (その通りね。)
